Jerry Martin made wheel-thrown and slab-formedfunctional stoneware pottery. Decorative techniques inluded the sgraffito technique (scratching through a layer of slip to reveal the color of the clay beneath) . The pieces were fired in a salt kiln or at timesfired using the raku method. Jerry Martin started Raku, a store, in Claremont, California, with his partner Doug Lawrie. Their goal was to sell all the pottery they and their colleagues were making. After Lawrie left to study in Japan Jerry Martin and his wife continued to run the store, moved, and expanded it before selling the business in 2005.
