    About
    Biography

Kathy King?s pieces are thrown porcelain. The vessels are covered with a black slip which is scratched through using a sgraffito technique to expose the white clay beneath. Each piece is then given a clear glaze and fired. The use of sgraffito is a clear reference to her training as a printmaker. It is quite common for her pieces to carry a written message that heightens the impact of the images.King may use additional surface techniques that require a second firing such as China painting, transfers or decals.

King uses ceramic vessels, tiled furniture, and printmaking to present her issue oriented narratives. Her work presents her views on women?s issues as seen in both print and digital mass media. She uses satirical humor and sarcasm to celebrate her gender and to raise questions about traditional sexual norms. King has been inspired by Matt Nolan and other contemporary avant-garde potters.
