Rodney Mott is known for functional vessel forms that are characterized by stamped and deeply carved surfaces. He uses various techniques to create his pieces often combining techniques in a single piece. In addition, Mott also creates abstracted figurative sculptures inspired by Picasso and Modigliani. Common motifs found in his art are simple figures, pottery forms, and simplified scenes of life.Mott developed an interest in woodfired ceramics after meeting Daniel Rhodes. By1990, he had built his first woodfired kiln in Volcano,California. He founded Woodstoke, a ceramic woodfiring workshop, held at his studio in Penryn,California. At Woodstoke nationally and internationally recognized artists demonstrated their skils while a multi-day wood-firing also took place. Mott has this to say about his creative life, "My focus is wood-fired pottery and sculpture. I also enjoy working in bronze, oil, and acrylic paintings, as well as clay mono-prints.? A clay monoprint is a single print made by painting glazes onto a plaster bat, covering the imagery with slip then when the slip has hardened removing it from the bat with the image attached."""
