Susan Kennedy is known for functional and sculptural works in clay. Surface techniques include drawing, patterned carving, and colored slip (liquid clay) application in the leather-hard stage. Work is typically fired in a soda kiln,causing mottled surfaces that range from white to earth-oranges and browns.
Kennedy states her work is about play, mutability, touch, mysterious narrative, miniature worlds, and fantastical realities. Upon first glance, a portion of her work appears inspired by the marine world often intertwined with the aforementioned subject matter.
