Suzanne Kane is known for desert botanical mixed media sculptures inspired by the flora and fauna of the desert in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The work is mixed media, employing clay and steel.
Kane builds the desert botanical sculptures with commercial stoneware. To achieve both smooth and textured surfaces underglaze color and mid-fire glazes are used. Welded steel is used as a structure to create the overall form of the large scale sculptures with ceramic flowers and leaves appearing to be organically attached. Kane works on large sculptures, sometimes at monumental scale, for both public and private spaces. Her work can be seen in the landscape of the desert and in architectural settings.
In 2018, Kane was profiled by her local PBS station, where they interviewed her about her studio work and life in Las Cruces, which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGp20-FqPIY .
