Thanos Johnson's work ranged from functional pieces to sculptures. Johnson spent extended periods of time in Korea and in Japan where he worked with and was influenced by the philosophy and work of Shoji Hamada and the Mingei tradition. He used Japanese tools and techniques, including the Japanese hand wheel and Raku firing.
He also produced a large body of water color paintings.
