Michael Boylen is known for stoneware plates and tiles as well as being an accomplished glass blower.

After his Bachelor of Arts Degree, Boylen studied ceramics with Frans Wildenhain and Hobart Cowles at the School for American Craftsmen. During his Master of Fine Arts studies at the University of Wisconsin, Boyden studied ceramics with Don Reitz and glass blowing with Harvey Littleton. He was mentored by Dominick Lubino, a studio glass artist.

Boylen played a significant role in the evolution of the Studio Art Glass Movement. Boylen was president of the Vermont Arts Council from 1974 to 1976.
