Melissa Mytty is known for hand-built pinched functional porcelain pottery and vessel-oriented small-scale sculpture.
Vessel oriented sculpture can be seen as iterations of an abstracted teapot or vessel atop variations of hand-designed plastic bases. At times these sculptural works do not have a plastic plinth. These are intended for table top or pedestal display. Sculptural works are also designed to be wall-hung.
Across both functional and sculptural bodies of work, Mytty uses the white vessel as a canvas; adding layers of bright fresh glaze that may move when kiln-fired. Her work draws from the rich history of ceramics, a preoccupation with the cup as subject, and sensibilities of 'street' style.
