Patricia Herzog is known for hand-built functional and sculptural works in clay. Decorative subject matter includes an emphasis on animal imagery and patterns in nature. Forms are inspired by her travels and Tennessee surroundings. Sculptural works feature small figures that are typically pit fired, often reflecting the art of ancient cultures. Throughout her career, Herzog has focused on hand building forms with clay.
Bright glazes, organic and patterned stamped textures and an interest in functionality are present in Herzog's work. Early work is created using porcelain high fired to 2,350 Fahrenheit (cone10). Mid-career work is created using earthenware low fired in an electric kiln. Mature work is created using stoneware fired in an electric kiln to a mid-range temperature 2,269 Fahrenheit (cone 6).
