Ethel Julia Bouffleaur | 1894 – Present

Ethel Julia Bouffleur is known for stoneware pottery with decorative natural imagery, such as landscapes, trees, and leaves glazed with solid matte colors.

In the 1920s, Bouffleur helped develop the ceramics program at Iowa State College, now Iowa State University. Her interest in childhood education is shown in her work with both Professor Erwin Christensen and Theodore Karwoski of the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Bouffleur received The Julia C. G. Piatt Memorial Fellowship, which was used to study elementary art education in France and the school of Professor Granz Cizek, Vienna, Austria to develop technique of approach to free expression in children’s art.
