Jocelyn Y. Howard is known for figurative stoneware sculpture fired in an electric kiln. Howard's hand-built forms are modeled featuring fragmented body parts and surrogate parts including those of dolls and puppets. In the leather-hard stage, Howard layers colored slip (liquid clay), stains in various combinations and bisque fires. Glazes are applied in strategic areas and work is glaze-fired. Once out of the kiln, a layer of cold wax is applied to matte areas for protection.

Howard's subject matter includes sexuality, gender identity, and shame.
