Gary Shaffer

Gary Shaffer is best known for wheel thrown stoneware, and porcelain functional pottery. He reduction fires to cone 10 in three kilns, gas, electric and wood fired. Each kiln has a unique use: one for glaze firing; one for salt glaze stoneware pottery; and one for wood firing. Surface techniques include cobalt blue slip trailed designs and the use of experimental glazes. Shaffer?s functional forms include large lidded jars, pitchers, garden vessels, plates, and bowls as well as thrown and hand altered sculptural vessel forms.

At Glenville State College, Shaffer studied with Charles Scott. Before establishing his own pottery, Schaffer taught high school ceramics.
