Vaea Marx lived in the outback of Australia for a number of years. This experience led him to make a series of pieces based on the saddle.
He lived in Japan between 1952 and 1954 where he studied with Kawai Kanjiro and was exposed to the work of Shoji Hamada and the philosophy of Soetsu Yanagi. Upon his return to the US, he was asked by Peter Voulkos to be the studio assistant at the University of California, Berkeley, California.
