Rocking Chair

USA, 1970

A sculpture as an abstract rocking chair. The clay is left rough with many cracks and impressions from the artist's fingers. The rockers are fat coils of clay with washes of blue glaze, They expend beyond the seat and back that are made by a draped slab of clay. There are orange and yellow tiles set in the clay on the seat and back. There is a dark area of blue on the back above the arms that are torn thin slabs of clay set on end. There is a piece of clay behind the back with a clay flange over the top of the back.

A side view showing the rockers, the arms and the back of the chair. The crudeness of the parts is obvious as is the way they were pushed together.

The other side showing the slab of this arm extends out ward at the base of the rocker. It is stained with stripes of blue.

The underside shows the slab that forms the seat resting on the coiled rockers. The underside of the seat is yellow as are some areas of the rockers. A label with Scripps College and an undiscernible accession number is attached to one of the rockers.
