Ernest Allan Batchelder

Ernest Allan Batchelder is known for ceramic tile and slip cast vessels. Master tiles were most often hand carved and created in multiples with the aid of plaster molds. Batchelder's hand carved tiles typically feature colored engobe inlay and appear in low relief. A variety of representational and patterned tiles were produced, namely through Batchelder's tile company in Pasadena,California. Later, Batchelder produced slipcast utilitarian vessels in a range of bright colors. Batchelder was an early pioneer of the Arts and Crafts Movement in California in first half of the 20thCentury.
