Courtney Martin makes functional stoneware that can be wheel-thrown or hand-built. The extensive patterning that characterize the work is created using a latex or wax resist and is inspired by abstract shapes and patterns of African mud cloth and the geometric forms of architectural ironwork.

The pieces are fired in a wood-burning cross-draft climbing kiln. While Courtney Martin uses color, much of her work explores the patterning possibilities of only black and white glazes.
